A New Home for Vipassana in the Heart of the Baltic Region
Dhamma Laṭṭhi, Sapling of Dhamma in Pali, is set in a serene natural environment within the Gauja National Park. The property features open meadows, young and mature trees, and two quiet ponds, creating a peaceful setting that naturally supports deep practice.
Despite its tranquil location, the centre is easy to reach: it lies in the middle of Latvia, about 60 km from Riga and 10 km from Sigulda, making it convenient not only for local meditators but also for students from the neighbouring Baltic countries.
Since 2010, Vipassana meditation courses in the tradition of S. N. Goenka and Sayagyi U Ba Khin have been held in Latvia. In 2022, the Trust found a suitable property to rent and signed a three-year agreement. When the land came up for sale the following year, the Trust submitted an offer, and the purchase was completed in 2024.
The centre covers 53 hectares (131 acres) across three land titles. Its buildings include a residential house with kitchen, dining space, and basic server accommodation; a barn; and an accommodation building topped by a meditation hall. In 2024, five ten-day courses were held here, along with multiple short courses and work periods. By December 2025, four ten-day courses and several short courses had already taken place.
The plan for the near future is to accommodate around sixty students and ten servers, together with upgrades that will support comfortable and well-run courses.
If you would like to support the Latvian Vipassana community as they develop their long-term vision for this centre, please consider contributing to the Latvia Fund. Your generosity helps the Dhamma continue to grow and benefit meditators in this region and beyond.
